Nineveh: Minecraft

Bouw voor de toekomst, red het verleden

(English version below)

Save the Past, Build the Future

On 25 November 2017 and 3 & 11 March 2018, we re-built parts of the ancient city of Nineveh in Minecraft together with hundreds of enthusiastic participants.

These events were made possible by the Cultural Emergency Response Programme of the Prince Claus Fund and held in the National Museum of Antiquities (RMO) at Leiden and coincided with the Nineveh exhibit. The direct reason for the re-construction of Nineveh was to make a statement against the destruction of Mosul’s heritage during the occupation of Mosul by IS.

We first created the landscape of the ancient city, based on current and archaeological maps. Then, based on historical and archaeological materials and the imagination of our particpants, we re-constructed the Nergal gate and the Palace without Rival.

Now, it is possible to see the results of the fun but also hard work put in by hundreds of builders. Download the map below to see what was built. You can also keep on building the city of Nineveh at home with inspiration from an instructional booklet.
